About Luis Arroyo
Luis Enrique "Tite" Arroyo (1927-2016), a left-handed pitcher from Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, signed to play professional ball with Ponce in Puerto Rico's winter league in 1946 and reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals on April 20, 1955. This is his rookie card, capturing that debut season: he won his first six decisions and stood 10-3 at the All-Star break, earning a spot on the 1955 National League All-Star team, where he and Vic Power became among the first Puerto Ricans selected to the Midsummer Classic. He faded to a 10-8 record with a 4.19 ERA that year and was later dealt to Pittsburgh, then Cincinnati, before finding fame with the New York Yankees. Reinvented as a screwball-throwing relief ace, Arroyo enjoyed a spectacular 1961 season, going 15-5 with a league-leading 29 saves and a 2.19 ERA, winning AL Fireman of the Year and helping the Yankees to the World Series title. His nickname "Tite" dated to his 1949 minor-league stint in Greensboro, North Carolina, as sportswriter Bob Broeg noted it was as close as drawling Carolinians could get to pronouncing his surname. Over eight seasons he went 40-32 with 44 saves and a 3.93 ERA. Like other early-series 1956 Topps cards, #64 exists with two back-stock variations, the common white back and the scarcer gray.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
