1956 Topps #65 Johnny O'Brien
1956 Topps #65 Johnny O'Brien

About Johnny O'Brien
A two-sport star and identical twin, Johnny O'Brien was born December 11, 1930, in South Amboy, New Jersey, and made his name as a 5-foot-9 basketball All-American at Seattle University, where in 1952 he became the first collegian to score 1,000 points in a single season and drew a famous crowd against the Harlem Globetrotters. Signed off the Seattle campus as a bonus baby alongside his twin brother Eddie, he debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1953 and, after missing 1954 for military service, played parts of six major-league seasons (Pirates 1953 and 1955-58, Cardinals 1958, Braves 1959). A second baseman by trade, O'Brien often shared the middle infield with Eddie, one of the few twin double-play combinations in big-league history. Because bonus-rule roster limits kept him around, he was also converted to relief pitching, going 1-3 with a 5.61 ERA and once striking out future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. He finished a .250 career hitter with 4 home runs and 59 RBI over 339 games. After baseball he served as a King County commissioner and later ran Kingdome operations in Seattle; he died in 2025. His card #65 exists with the Series 1 white and scarcer gray back-stock variation.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.
- White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
