About Frank Thomas
Frank Joseph Thomas (June 11, 1929 – January 16, 2023), a Pittsburgh native who studied for the Roman Catholic priesthood at Mount Carmel seminary in Ontario before the Pirates signed him in the late 1940s, developed into one of the National League's most feared sluggers of the 1950s. After leading the Southern Association with 35 home runs at New Orleans in 1952, he debuted with Pittsburgh on August 17, 1951, and became a fixture in the Pirates' outfield, belting 30 homers with 102 RBI in his first full season in 1953. A three-time All-Star (1954, 1955, 1958), Thomas started the 1958 All-Star Game at third base and set career highs that year of 35 home runs and 109 RBI. Over 16 seasons (1951–1966) with seven NL clubs, he batted .266 with 1,671 hits, 286 home runs, and 962 RBI. Traded to the expansion New York Mets, he led the 1962 club with 34 homers and 94 RBI, earning lasting fame as an "Original Met." Famous for catching big-league fastballs bare-handed—a stunt born on a 1949 dare in Waco, Texas—Thomas is not enshrined in the Hall of Fame. His card carries the set's white/gray back-stock variation (the scarcer white back is the tougher find).

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
