About Jerry Lynch
Jerry Lynch was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who became one of the most feared pinch-hitters in baseball history. Signed out of the Yankees' farm system in 1950 and later selected by Pittsburgh in the Rule 5 Draft after two years of Korean War military service, he debuted for the Pirates on April 15, 1954, at Ebbets Field. Lynch played 13 big-league seasons (1954-1966) split between the Pirates (1954-56, 1963-66) and Cincinnati Reds (1957-63), batting .277 with 798 hits, 115 home runs, and 470 RBI. Nicknamed "Lynch the Pinch" for his late-inning heroics, he set the major-league record with 18 career pinch-hit home runs, breaking George Crowe's mark, a record that stood until Cliff Johnson passed it in 1984. His finest year was 1961, when he hit .315 overall and .404 as a pinch-hitter with five pinch homers, capped by a pennant-clinching two-run pinch home run on September 26 that carried the Reds to their first National League flag in 21 years. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1988. This first-series card (#97) exists with both white and gray back stock, the scarcer gray variety being the more sought-after among 1956 Topps collectors.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
