About Whitey Lockman

Carroll Walter "Whitey" Lockman -- nicknamed for his light blond hair -- signed with the New York Giants as a 17-year-old during World War II and reached the majors in mid-1945, homering in his first big-league at-bat just before his 19th birthday, still the youngest player in MLB history to do so. A left-handed hitter, he became the Giants' regular outfielder in 1948 and later shifted to first base, and he was the National League's starting first baseman in the 1952 All-Star Game at Philadelphia's Shibe Park, his lone All-Star selection. Lockman is best remembered for the 1951 pennant race: in the ninth inning of the deciding playoff against Brooklyn he doubled home a run and stood on second as the tying run when Bobby Thomson hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." He hit .240 with a home run in the 1951 World Series loss to the Yankees, then was part of the 1954 champions who swept Cleveland. Over 15 seasons and 1,666 games he batted .279 with 1,658 hits, 114 home runs, and 563 RBI, and later managed the Chicago Cubs (1972-1974). He died in 2009.
