About Russ Meyer
Russell Charles "Mad Monk" Meyer (October 25, 1923 - November 16, 1997) was a right-handed pitcher from Peru, Illinois. Originally signed by the White Sox in 1942, he was released after a wartime illness, then caught on with the Cubs and debuted September 13, 1946. Over 13 seasons (1946-1959) he pitched for the Cubs, Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Redlegs, Red Sox and Kansas City Athletics, going 94-73 with a 3.99 ERA, 672 strikeouts and 13 shutouts in 319 games. His best years came with the 1949 Phillies (17 wins, 3.08 ERA) and the 1953 Dodgers (15-5). Meyer reached three World Series, all against the Yankees (1950, 1953, 1955), earning a ring with the 1955 champion Dodgers. The "Mad Monk" tag traced back to a high-school basketball team that shaved their heads before a title game, but it stuck because of his fiery temper. This card is a Series 3 issue, printed on white back stock (the set's white/gray scarcity split affects only the lower series).
