About Dee Fondy

Dee Virgil Fondy (1924–1999) was a tall, left-handed-hitting first baseman who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization and worked his way up through the minors with the Fort Worth Cats, Montreal Royals, and Mobile Bears. He debuted with the Chicago Cubs on April 17, 1951, and made an immediate splash, lining a bases-loaded triple in his first major-league at-bat. Standing 6-foot-3, Fondy played eight seasons, spending most of his career with the Cubs (1951–1957) before finishing with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1957) and Cincinnati Reds (1958). He was a steady, contact-oriented hitter who batted over .300 three times and closed his career with a .286 average, 1,000 hits, 69 home runs, 373 RBI, and 84 stolen bases over 967 games. His most enduring footnote in baseball history came on September 24, 1957, when, as a Pirate, he became the last player ever to bat at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field, grounding out to shortstop Don Zimmer for the final out in the ballpark's history. After his playing days he became a longtime scout and front-office man, credited with signing Hall of Famer Paul Molitor. This 1956 Topps card (#112) exists with the set's two back-stock variations, the scarcer white back and the more common gray back.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

  • White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
