About Paul Minner
Paul "Lefty" Minner was a lanky 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher who signed with a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate for a $1,000 bonus in 1940 and worked his way up through the minors, leading the Class D Appalachian League with 18 wins and a 1.41 ERA in 1942 before serving in the Army during World War II. He debuted with Brooklyn in 1946 and pitched parts of three seasons there, appearing in Game 5 of the 1949 World Series against the Yankees. Traded to the Chicago Cubs before the 1950 season, he became a rotation mainstay for seven years; after a neck injury (suffered shagging fly balls alongside Pete Reiser) cost him his fastball, he reinvented himself as a crafty junkballer relying on changing speeds and control. His best year was 1952, when he went 14-9. Over 10 big-league seasons he compiled a 69-84 record with a 3.94 ERA and 481 strikeouts across 1,310.1 innings, and was a solid hitter for a pitcher (.219, 6 HR). Fittingly for this 1956 card, that final season saw him surrender the first home run of Frank Robinson's career on April 28, 1956; a fall and cracked vertebra that June ended his career. He was born July 30, 1923, in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and died in 2006.
