1956 Topps #15 Ernie Banks
1956 Topps #15 Ernie Banks
Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub, in his second-year card. Double-printed.

About Ernie Banks
Ernie Banks broke into pro ball with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues in 1950, and after U.S. Army service returned to the Monarchs before the Chicago Cubs signed him; he debuted on September 17, 1953, and spent his entire 19-season career (1953-1971) in Chicago, first as a slugging shortstop and later at first base. Nicknamed "Mr. Cub" and beloved for his sunny catchphrase "It's a beautiful day for a ballgame... Let's play two!", he became the first National League player to win back-to-back MVP Awards, taking the honor in 1958 and 1959, and added a Gold Glove at shortstop in 1960. A 14-time All-Star, Banks hit .274 with 512 home runs and 1,636 RBI, and in 1955 set a then-record five grand slams in a single season. Remarkably, he holds the major-league mark for most games played (2,528) without ever reaching the postseason. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977 in his first year of eligibility. This card #15 is Banks's second-year Topps issue; like other first-series cards it exists with the scarcer gray back and the common white back, and it was double-printed.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.
- White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
Double Print
An uncut Series-1 sheet (110 cards, 10x11) shows 20 cards were double-printed - modestly more plentiful than their series-mates. The list happily includes #30 Jackie Robinson and #31 Hank Aaron. The only print-quantity designation in the set (there is no recognized short-print run).
