About Stan Lopata
Born September 12, 1925, in the Delray section of Detroit to Polish immigrant parents, Stanley Edward Lopata was a hard-hitting catcher signed by the Philadelphia Phillies out of American Legion ball in 1946 for a substantial bonus. He debuted with Philadelphia in 1948 and spent 13 major-league seasons in the National League, all with the Phillies (1948-1958) except for two closing years with the Milwaukee Braves (1959-1960). Lopata's career turned in 1954 when, on the advice of Rogers Hornsby, he adopted a distinctive deep-crouch batting stance that unlocked his power. His finest year was 1956, the season of this card, when he played 146 games and set a Phillies record for right-handed batters with 32 home runs, adding 95 RBIs, a .267 average, and the league's top slugging percentage among catchers. A two-time All-Star (1955 and 1956), he was also the first National League catcher to play regularly wearing glasses. Nicknamed "Big Stash," he finished with 116 home runs and a .254 average over 853 games and died June 15, 2013, at age 87.
