About Robin Roberts
A star basketball captain at Michigan State who took up pitching in college, Robin Roberts signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for a $25,000 bonus in 1947 and reached the majors on June 17, 1948. The durable right-hander spent 19 seasons (1948-1966) in the big leagues, primarily with the Phillies and later the Orioles, Astros and Cubs, finishing 286-245 with a 3.41 ERA and 2,357 strikeouts. A seven-time All-Star, he was the National League's premier workhorse of the early 1950s, winning 20 or more games in six straight seasons (1950-1955), peaking with a 28-7 mark in 1952. He led the NL in complete games five times, piling up 305 for his career and once completing 28 consecutive starts. In 1950 he anchored the pennant-winning "Whiz Kids" at 20-11 and pitched in the World Series, which the Phillies lost in four games to the Yankees. A fearless strike-thrower, he surrendered a then-record 505 career home runs (a mark that stood until 2010), a byproduct of challenging hitters and pitching deep into games. Roberts was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976. This second-series card (#180) exists with both white and gray back stock, the white being the scarcer of the two.

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

- Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
