About Del Ennis

A Philadelphia native, Del Ennis was signed by Phillies scout Jocko Collins out of Olney High School in 1943, hit well in the minors, then served in the U.S. Navy on Guam during World War II before debuting in 1946. A right-handed-hitting left fielder with a strong throwing arm and lively bat, he became the first Phillies rookie ever named to an All-Star team just eleven weeks after his debut and was chosen for three All-Star Games (1946, 1951, 1955). His signature year came in 1950, when he led the National League with 126 RBI and batted .311 with 31 home runs, finishing fourth in MVP voting as the youthful "Whiz Kids" won Philadelphia's first pennant in 35 years; the Phillies were then swept in the World Series by the New York Yankees. From 1948 to 1957 Ennis drove in more runs than anyone in baseball except Stan Musial. Over 14 seasons with the Phillies (1946-1956), Cardinals, Reds, and White Sox, he batted .284 with 2,063 hits, 288 home runs, and 1,284 RBI, and held the Phillies' career home run record for decades. Nicknamed "Ding Dong Del" and "Ennis the Menace" by the club's radio announcers, the hometown slugger endured heavy booing at Shibe Park yet remained one of the franchise's premier power hitters. This card is a standard No. 220 in Topps' 1956 third series.
