About Tommy Byrne
A hard-throwing left-hander born in Baltimore on December 31, 1919, Tommy Byrne pitched at Baltimore City College and Wake Forest College before signing with the New York Yankees, debuting in 1943. Over 13 major-league seasons (1943, 1946-1957) he worked mainly for the Yankees but also spent time with the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox, and Washington Senators, finishing 85-69 with a 4.11 ERA and 766 strikeouts. His chronic control problems earned him the nickname "Wild Man": he led the American League in walks in three straight seasons (1949-1951) and in hit batsmen five times. Named an All-Star in 1950, Byrne tamed his wildness for a career year in 1955, going 16-5 with a 3.15 ERA and leading the AL in winning percentage (.762). He won World Series rings with the Yankees in 1949 and 1956, and in the 1955 Series he threw a complete-game five-hitter in Game 2 and drove in two runs with his own single. An unusually strong-hitting pitcher, he batted .238 with 14 home runs (including two grand slams) and often filled in as a pinch-hitter. After baseball he served as mayor of Wake Forest, North Carolina, from 1973 to 1987; he died in 2007.
