About Arnie Portocarrero
Arnold Mario Portocarrero, a right-handed pitcher born July 5, 1931, in New York City to a Puerto Rican family (his father Oscar had emigrated from the island in 1927), signed with the Philadelphia Athletics on August 1, 1949, out of George Washington High School, where he compiled a 29-0 record. After two years in the Army during the Korean War era, he reached the majors on April 18, 1954, and pitched seven big-league seasons with the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics (1954-1957) and Baltimore Orioles (1958-1960). As a rookie he went 9-18 with a 4.06 ERA, finishing second in the American League in losses and leading it in wild pitches. Traded to Baltimore for Bud Daley before 1958, he enjoyed his finest year, going 15-9 with a 3.25 ERA. A shoulder injury suffered pitching winter ball in Puerto Rico sapped his fastball, and he finished with a career mark of 38-57, a 4.32 ERA, 338 strikeouts, 33 complete games, and five shutouts across 166 games. He died June 21, 1986, in Kansas City, Kansas. This card, #53 in the 1956 Topps set, is a Series 1 issue known with both white and gray back stock, the scarcer gray being the harder to find of the two.
