About Vic Power

Born Victor Felipe Pellot Pové in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Vic Power got his surname from a first-grade teacher's clerical change to his mother's maiden name "Pové." Discovered on the Puerto Rican sandlots by Negro Leagues veteran Quincy Trouppe and later signed by the New York Yankees, Power tore up the minors — including a .349 average for the Kansas City Blues in 1953 — but the Yankees notoriously refused to promote him, GM George Weiss deeming him "not the Yankee type," and traded him to the Philadelphia Athletics in December 1953. He debuted in 1954 and played twelve seasons (1954–1965) at first base for the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles/California Angels, and Philadelphia Phillies, finishing with a .284 average, 1,716 hits, 126 home runs, and 658 RBI while striking out just 247 times in over 6,000 at-bats. In 1955 with Kansas City — the season pictured on this card — he hit .319, second in the AL batting race to Al Kaline, and that year he and Luis Arroyo became the first Puerto Ricans named to an All-Star Game. A flashy, one-handed fielder who was the first Puerto Rican to win a Gold Glove, Power captured seven consecutive Gold Gloves (1958–1964) and once stole home twice in a single game (August 14, 1958). A member of the Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Fame, he is often called the island's greatest player after Roberto Clemente. Like other #1–180 cards in the set, this issue exists with both white and gray back stock, the gray being the scarcer.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)

Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only. The scarcity FLIPS at #100: on cards 1-100 the gray back is slightly scarcer (a modest premium); on cards 101-180 the gray backs are far more common (about 12-15 to 1), so the WHITE back is the scarce, premium variation - often +50% or more, and disproportionately so in high grade, since the white-stock cards tend to be more brittle.

  • White Back: Printed on white/cream card stock. The standard/common look on cards 1-100; the SCARCE, premium variation on cards 101-180.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock. The scarcer variation on cards 1-100 (modest premium); the common look on cards 101-180; the ONLY back on cards 181-340.
