About Joe Astroth
A steady defensive catcher, Joe Astroth (born September 1, 1922, in East Alton, Illinois) reached the majors by a rare path: after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, he signed with the Philadelphia Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1945 on scout Tom Fleming's recommendation and made his big-league debut on August 13, 1945, without ever having played in the minor leagues. He spent his entire ten-year career (1945-1946, 1949-1956) with the Athletics, remaining with the club when it moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City in 1955 — the franchise shown on this second-series card. Astroth batted .254 with 401 hits, 13 home runs and 156 RBI across 544 games, but his reputation rested on his glove: he led American League catchers in 1953 in caught-stealing percentage (72.1%) and double plays (13). His signature feat came on September 23, 1950, when he drove in six runs in a single sixth inning against Washington, connecting for a grand slam and a two-run single in the same frame. In 1952 he served as the personal catcher for Bobby Shantz, handling 23 of Shantz's 24 wins during the diminutive left-hander's AL MVP season. Like other cards numbered 1-180 in the 1956 set, #106 exists with both the scarcer white-back and the more common gray-back cardboard stock. Astroth died on May 3, 2013.
