1956 Topps #238 Walt Dropo

About Walt Dropo
Walter "Moose" Dropo, pictured on this 1956 Topps card with the Chicago White Sox, was a right-handed first baseman from Moosup, Connecticut. A multi-sport standout at the University of Connecticut, he signed with the Boston Red Sox after a 1947 Fenway Park tryout. His nickname, "The Moose from Moosup," nodded to both his hometown and his imposing 6-foot-5 frame. Dropo debuted in 1949 and exploded in 1950, winning American League Rookie of the Year (the first Red Sox player so honored) and earning an All-Star selection. That season he tied for the league RBI lead with 144, batted .322, hit 34 home runs, and led the AL in total bases. In 1952, after a trade to Detroit, he tied the major-league record with 12 consecutive hits. Over 13 seasons (1949-1961) with Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Baltimore, Dropo batted .270 with 1,113 hits, 152 home runs, and 704 RBI. He died in 2010 at age 87.
