About Jose Valdivielso
José Martinez de Valdivielso López (May 22, 1934 - March 4, 2025) was a Cuban-born shortstop from Matanzas whose 1956 Topps card (#237) is his rookie card. A slick-fielding, right-handed infielder, he reached the majors on June 21, 1955, with the Washington Senators. He played parts of five seasons (1955-56, then 1959-61) for the Senators and their successor, the Minnesota Twins, batting .219 with 213 hits, 26 doubles, eight triples, nine home runs and 85 RBI across 401 games. In 1960, the Senators' final season in Washington, he was the club's most-used shortstop before Zoilo Versalles claimed the job. Valdivielso also took part in the first all-Cuban triple play in big-league history, a 1-3-6 gem with pitcher Camilo Pascual and first baseman Julio Becquer. After his playing days he built a long second career as a Spanish-language radio analyst, working Yankees broadcasts alongside Buck Canel and joining the Mets' Spanish crew in 1974. He died in New York in 2025 at age 90.
