About George Kell
George Kell, a right-handed third baseman from Swifton, Arkansas, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers' Newport affiliate in 1940 and reached the majors with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics on September 28, 1943 after batting .396 at Lancaster. Over 15 seasons he starred for the Athletics (1943-46), Detroit Tigers (1946-52), Boston Red Sox (1952-54), Chicago White Sox (1954-56) and Baltimore Orioles (1956-57), retiring with a .306 average, 2,054 hits, 78 home runs and 870 RBI. In 1949 he edged Ted Williams for the AL batting title by the razor-thin margin of .3429 to .3427, denying Williams a third Triple Crown and becoming the first third baseman to win a batting crown since Heinie Zimmerman in 1912. A slick fielder who led AL third basemen in fielding percentage seven times, Kell was a ten-time All-Star. This 1956 Topps card pictures him with the White Sox, whom he joined via a May 1954 trade and for whom he hit .312 in 1955 before being dealt to Baltimore that May. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1983 and later spent 37 seasons as a beloved Detroit Tigers broadcaster.
