About Harry Dorish
Signed by Boston Red Sox scout Joe Reardon straight out of high school in 1941, right-hander Harry Dorish worked his way up through the minors (Canton, Scranton, and Louisville) before his major-league debut with the Red Sox on April 15, 1947. Over parts of 10 seasons (1947-1956) he pitched for Boston, the St. Louis Browns, the Chicago White Sox, and the Baltimore Orioles, working mostly in relief. His best stretch came with the White Sox, where he led the American League in saves in 1952, going 8-4 with a 2.47 ERA and 11 saves. For his career he compiled a 45-43 record with a 3.83 ERA, 48 saves, and 332 strikeouts across 323 games. A World War II Army veteran who served in the Pacific, he also owns a quirky footnote: on June 2, 1950, he stole home on the front end of a double steal, making him the last AL pitcher ever to steal home. Traded from Chicago to Baltimore in 1955, he closed his playing days with the Orioles, the team shown on this 1956 Topps card, which exists in the set's white-back and scarcer gray-back stock variations. He later served as a big-league pitching coach for the Red Sox (1963) and Braves. He often went by the nickname "Fritz," though its origin is undocumented. Dorish was born in 1921 in Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, and died in 2000.

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 & 2 (cards 1-180)
Every card #1-180 exists with the reverse printed on white/cream card stock OR on gray card stock. Cards #181-340 are gray-back only.
