About Willy Miranda
Guillermo "Willy" Miranda Perez, a slick-fielding, switch-hitting shortstop from Velasco, Cuba, was signed by Washington Senators scout Joe Cambria and reached the majors in 1951 after minor-league stops at Sherman-Denison and Chattanooga. Over nine big-league seasons (1951-1959) he played for the Senators, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Browns, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first Cuban since the World War I era to wear a Yankees uniform. Miranda was the archetypal "good field, no hit" shortstop: contemporaries marveled at his range and glovework, and Tom Lasorda later called him the best shortstop he ever saw. He appeared on the 1953 World Series-champion Yankees roster and, in November 1954, was part of the famous 17-player trade with Baltimore, the largest deal in big-league history to that point, that helped bring Bob Turley and Don Larsen to New York. A career .221 hitter with 423 hits, 6 home runs, and 132 RBI over 824 games, he made his name with the leather, anchoring the mid-1950s Orioles infield. A five-time Cuban League champion with Almendares, Miranda was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. This 1956 Topps card, issued during his Baltimore years, exists with both the scarcer white and more common gray back-stock.
