Travis Jackson - 1933 Goudey #102
1933 Goudey #102 Travis Jackson

About Travis Jackson
Travis Calvin Jackson was a shortstop signed by Giants manager John McGraw in June 1922 out of the Little Rock Travelers, on the recommendation of Travelers manager and former big leaguer Kid Elberfeld. He spent his entire 15-year career (1922-1936) with New York, taking over at short in 1923 after Dave Bancroft's injury and quickly establishing himself as the game's premier defensive infielder, despite a league-leading 58 errors in his first full season in 1924 — his powerful, accurate arm became legendary. Nagging injuries, including torn knee cartilage, cost him time through the late 1920s and early 1930s, but he hit over .300 five times, peaking at .339 in 1930, and finished with a .291 average, 1,768 hits, 135 home runs, and 929 RBI. Teammates and writers called him "Stonewall" or "Stoney," likening his sure-handed defense to Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's battlefield resolve. He played in four World Series with the Giants (1922, 1923, 1924, and 1936), winning the 1933 championship over Washington after moving to third base late in his career to spare his knees, and was picked for the National League's first All-Star squad as its starting shortstop in 1934. Jackson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1982, a selection credited with drawing recognition to glove-first middle infielders.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Travis Jackson card?
It is card #102 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Travis Jackson with the New York Giants.
Is the 1933 Goudey Travis Jackson #102 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
