About Earle Combs

Earle Bryan Combs (1899-1976) was a left-handed-hitting center fielder who spent his entire 12-year career with the New York Yankees (1924-1935) after starring for the Louisville Colonels, whom the Yankees purchased him from for $50,000. Batting leadoff ahead of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Combs was the table-setter for the 1927 "Murderers' Row" club widely regarded as the greatest team ever, hitting .356 that year with a league-leading 23 triples and a then-club-record 231 hits (unbroken until 1986). A career .325 hitter with 1,866 hits and 154 triples over 1,455 games, he topped 190 hits five times and drew far more walks than strikeouts. Known as "The Kentucky Colonel" for his gentlemanly manner and as "The Mail Carrier" in the minors for his speed on the bases, Combs won three World Series with the Yankees (1927, 1928, 1932) and was later a coach who helped tutor a young Joe DiMaggio in playing center field at Yankee Stadium. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970. His 1933 Goudey card (#103) is a scarcer high-number issue, and the front carries an uncorrected error misspelling his first name "Earl" instead of "Earle."

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Earle Combs card?

It is card #103 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Earle Combs with the New York Yankees.

Is the 1933 Goudey Earle Combs #103 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
