1933 Goudey #148 Eddie Farrell

About Eddie Farrell
Edward Stephen "Doc" Farrell was born December 26, 1901, in Johnson City, New York, and died December 20, 1966. A middle infielder discovered playing semipro ball, he was signed by John McGraw's New York Giants in 1924 while completing his dental degree (DDS) at the University of Pennsylvania, debuting June 15, 1925 -- just three days before his graduation. That dental training gave him the nickname "Doc," which stuck for the rest of his career. Over nine major-league seasons (1925-1935) with the Giants, Boston Braves, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox, Farrell played shortstop, second, and third base, batting .260 with 467 hits, 10 home runs, and 213 RBI in 591 games. His finest year came in 1927, when he hit .316 with 92 RBI and 57 runs while splitting time between the Giants and Braves, briefly leading the league in batting early in the season. On the card he is pictured with the 1932-33 Yankees, where he served as a utility infielder backing up rookie Frank Crosetti; though he did not appear in the 1932 World Series, he was part of the Yankees' championship roster that swept the Cubs. After baseball, Farrell returned to dentistry in New Jersey, eventually heading the dental department at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Eddie Farrell card?
It is card #148 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Eddie Farrell with the New York Yankees.
Is the 1933 Goudey Eddie Farrell #148 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
