1933 Goudey #147 Leo Durocher

About Leo Durocher
Leo Durocher, born July 27, 1905, in West Springfield, Massachusetts, broke into pro ball with the Hartford Senators before Yankees scout Paul Krichell bought his contract for $7,500 in late 1925. A slick-fielding, light-hitting shortstop, Durocher won a World Series ring as a Yankees reserve on the 1928 champions, then moved to the Cincinnati Reds (1930-33) before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in mid-1933, the club shown on this card. He earned the nickname "The Lip" (or "Lippy") for his brash, hustling style, a persona Yankees manager Miller Huggins encouraged him to lean on to make up for a weak bat, inspired by boyhood idol Rabbit Maranville's creed to "never back up." As the Cardinals' regular shortstop, Durocher anchored the rough-and-tumble infield that grew into the pennant-winning "Gashouse Gang," which beat Detroit in the 1934 World Series the year after this card was issued. Over 17 big-league seasons he batted .247 with 24 home runs and 567 RBI. Durocher went on to a long, contentious managerial career with the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, and Astros, famously piloting the 1951 Giants' pennant comeback and winning the 1954 World Series, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994 on the strength of that managerial record.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Leo Durocher card?
It is card #147 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Leo Durocher with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Is the 1933 Goudey Leo Durocher #147 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
