Johnny Leonard Roosevelt "Pepper" Martin was born February 29, 1904, in Temple, Oklahoma, and signed his first professional contract as a teenager, grinding through the Cardinals' farm system for parts of several seasons - Greenville, Fort Smith (where he picked up the "Pepper" nickname), Syracuse, Houston, and Rochester - before finally sticking with St. Louis. He debuted with the Cardinals in 1928 but did not become a regular until 1931, when at age 27 he took over center field and hit .300. That October he authored one of the most explosive World Series performances ever, batting .500 with 12 hits and 5 stolen bases as the Cardinals upset Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics; Hall of Famer John McGraw called it the greatest individual World Series showing he had seen. Nicknamed the "Wild Horse of the Osage" for his reckless, headfirst-sliding, all-out style of play, Martin shifted to third base and became a centerpiece of the rowdy, pennant-winning 1934 "Gas House Gang" alongside Dizzy Dean and Joe Medwick, batting .355 in that year's World Series win over Detroit. A three-time All-Star (1933-35) who led the National League in stolen bases, he retired with a .298 career average, 1,227 hits, and 501 RBI over 13 seasons, all with St. Louis, before managing for more than a decade in the minors.
