About Frankie Frisch
Frank Francis Frisch, born September 9, 1897, in the Bronx, signed with John McGraw's New York Giants straight out of Fordham University in 1919 — McGraw kept him on the big-league roster rather than sending him to the minors, and he debuted that June as a pinch-hitter. A switch-hitting second baseman renowned for his speed and defense, Frisch starred for the Giants through 1926, then anchored the St. Louis Cardinals from 1927 on. He led the National League in stolen bases three times (1921, 1927, 1931), won the 1921 World Series with New York and the 1934 World Series with St. Louis, and captured the 1931 NL MVP award as the Cardinals took the pennant and beat the Athletics in the Series. His college heroics in football, basketball, and baseball at Fordham earned him the lifelong nickname "Fordham Flash." Over 19 seasons he batted .316 with 2,880 hits, 105 home runs, and 1,244 RBI in 2,311 games. Midway through the 1933 season — the year this card was issued — Frisch was named the Cardinals' player-manager, a role in which he would guide the rowdy "Gas House Gang" (Dizzy and Paul Dean, Pepper Martin, Joe Medwick) to the 1934 championship. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.
