About Jimmie Wilson
Born July 23, 1900 in Philadelphia, "Ace" Wilson signed with New Haven of the Eastern League as a teenager and reached the majors with the Phillies on April 17, 1923. A sturdy defensive catcher, he led the National League in putouts three times, assists twice, and double plays three times over an 18-season playing career (1923-1940) split between the Phillies, Cardinals, and Reds. He hit over .300 four times and finished with a .284 average, 1,358 hits, and 32 home runs in 1,525 games. Traded from Philadelphia to St. Louis in mid-game in 1928, Wilson caught for the Cardinals' pennant winners of 1928, 1930, and 1931, winning the 1931 World Series over Connie Mack's Athletics. In 1933, wearing this Goudey card's Cardinals uniform, he started behind the plate for the National League in the first All-Star Game at Comiskey Park. He went on to manage the Phillies (1934-1938) before joining Cincinnati as a coach, and at age 40 was pressed back into action when Ernie Lombardi was hurt in the 1940 World Series; Wilson caught six games, hit .353, and helped clinch the title in Game 7 — a comeback the press hailed as "Life Begins at 40!" He later managed the Cubs (1941-1944). Wilson died of a heart attack in 1947 at age 46.
