About Ethan Allen
Ethan Nathan Allen (born January 1, 1904, in Cincinnati, Ohio; died September 15, 1993) was a center fielder who went straight from the University of Cincinnati to the major leagues with the Reds in 1926, never appearing in the minors. Over 13 seasons (1926-1938) he played for the Reds, New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals (his club on this 1933 Goudey card), Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Browns, compiling a .300 lifetime average with 1,325 hits, 47 home runs, and 501 RBI. Allen called himself a "line-drive hitter" rather than a slugger; he tied for the National League lead in doubles (42) in 1934 and led the league in games played (156) while batting .307 and drawing MVP votes in 1935. His greatest legacy came after his playing days: he served as the National League's motion-picture director, producing instructional films seen by millions, spent 22 years as head baseball coach at Yale (where he coached future president George H.W. Bush), authored more than a dozen instructional baseball books, and in 1941 invented the enduringly popular Cadaco-Ellis tabletop game All-Star Baseball.
