About Larry Benton
Lawrence James Benton, a right-handed pitcher born November 20, 1897 in St. Louis, Missouri, broke into the majors with the Boston Braves on April 19, 1923, and spent 13 big-league seasons split among the Braves, New York Giants, and Cincinnati Reds. Dealt from Boston to the Giants in June 1927 in a multi-player trade, Benton had his career year in 1928, going 25-9 with a league-leading .735 winning percentage and 28 complete games to pace the National League in wins. He pitched for the Giants through 1930 before moving on to Cincinnati, where he was still active when Goudey issued this card in 1933. Over his career he finished with roughly 127-128 wins and losses, a 4.03 ERA, and 670 strikeouts in 455 games. He made his final big-league appearance back with the Braves on August 16, 1935, and died April 3, 1953, in Amberley, Ohio.
