About Taylor Douthit
Taylor Lee Douthit, born April 22, 1901, in Little Rock, Arkansas, was a slick-fielding center fielder who anchored the St. Louis Cardinals' outfield in the late 1920s. Recommended to the Cardinals by a University of California, Berkeley professor scouting part-time for Branch Rickey, he debuted in 1923 and took over as St. Louis's regular center fielder in 1926, helping the club win the 1926 World Series. Nicknamed "The Ball Hawk" for his exceptional range, Douthit set the major-league record for putouts by an outfielder in a season with 547 in 1928, was named to Babe Ruth's "All-America Team" that year, and was rated by manager John McGraw as the best center fielder of his day. Over 11 big-league seasons he batted .291 with 1,201 hits. Traded to Cincinnati in 1931, Douthit appeared in just one game for the Reds in 1933 - the team shown on this card - before being waived; rather than accept a demotion to the minors, he chose to retire from professional baseball.
