About Eppa Rixey
Eppa Rixey Jr. (born May 3, 1891, in Culpeper, Virginia; died February 28, 1963) went straight from the University of Virginia, where he earned a chemistry degree, to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1912 on the recommendation of NL umpire Cy Rigler. The 6-foot-5 left-hander pitched for the Phillies (1912-1920) and Cincinnati Reds (1921-1933), missing the 1918 season while serving with the Army's Chemical Warfare Division in World War I. A finesse pitcher who worked hitters with location and deep counts rather than power, Rixey finished with 266 wins and 251 losses and a career 3.15 ERA over 21 seasons - his 266 victories stood as the National League record for a left-hander until Warren Spahn passed him in 1959, and his 251 losses remain the most by any lefty in history. He threw 27 consecutive scoreless innings in 1932, and in 1933, his final season with Cincinnati at age 42, he went out with a 6-3 record. Teammates dubbed him "Jeptha," a nickname born from his thick Southern drawl (credited to sportswriter Bill Phelon), which Rixey said "sounds like a cross between a Greek letter fraternity and a college yell." He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee on January 27, 1963, but died about a month before his induction - reportedly cracking, on hearing the news, "I guess they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, aren't they?" He remains the first Virginian enshrined in Cooperstown.
