1933 Goudey #75 Willie Kamm

About Willie Kamm
William Edward "Willie" Kamm broke in with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League (1919-1922), where his defensive brilliance at third base drew major-league scouts, and the Chicago White Sox purchased him outright for $100,000 plus players in May 1922 - a record sum for a minor leaguer at the time. Kamm manned third base for the White Sox from 1923 to 1931 and finished his career with the Cleveland Indians (1931-1935), retiring with a .281 average, 1,643 hits, 827 RBI, and 29 home runs over 1,693 games. He was never a power hitter but drove in runs steadily, finishing fifth in the 1928 AL MVP vote after batting .308 with 84 RBI, and he twice topped 60 RBI in a season without hitting a single home run. His true fame was with the glove: he led American League third basemen in fielding percentage repeatedly during the 1920s, and Hall of Fame pitcher Charles "Chief" Bender called him the best third baseman he ever saw. By the time this 1933 Goudey card appeared, Kamm was Cleveland's veteran anchor at the hot corner. He was never elected to the Hall of Fame, but is remembered as one of the era's premier defensive third basemen.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Willie Kamm card?
It is card #75 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Willie Kamm with the Cleveland Indians.
Is the 1933 Goudey Willie Kamm #75 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
