1933 Goudey #27 George Connally
Low number: this card was printed on press sheets 1-2 (#1-40 plus #45-52), which saw shorter distribution than the rest of the 1933 run — low numbers are noticeably scarcer.

About George Connally
George "Sarge" Connally was a right-handed pitcher who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Chicago White Sox (1921, 1923-29) and Cleveland Indians (1931-34). Born in 1898 near McGregor, Texas, he earned his nickname from his rank in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he pitched for service teams before signing his first pro contract with Yakima of the Pacific Coast International League in 1921; the White Sox picked him up that same year. Used mostly as a swingman and one of the game's early relief specialists, he started only 67 of his 304 career games, going 46-63 for his career; his best season came in 1927, when he logged 198⅓ innings and 10 wins for Chicago. His durability and willingness to pitch on short rest earned him a second nickname, "Rubber Arm" - on display in 1933 when he made eight relief appearances for Cleveland in less than two weeks. In March 1934, in a Cleveland spring-training exhibition against the New Orleans Pelicans, Connally pitched immediately after Olympic star Babe Didrikson took the mound, each throwing two scoreless innings in one of baseball's odder sideshows. A batting-practice head injury effectively ended his career around 1935; he died in Houston in 1978.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey George Connally card?
It is card #27 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures George Connally with the Cleveland Indians.
Is the 1933 Goudey George Connally #27 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
