About Glenn Myatt
Glenn Calvin Myatt (1897-1969) was a left-handed-hitting catcher who broke in with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in 1920 after honing his game on Houston sandlots, where the Houston Post had already tabbed him the city's most promising young catcher. He spent the bulk of his 16-year major-league career with the Cleveland Indians, also seeing time with the Athletics, New York Giants, and Detroit Tigers before finishing in the minors with the Houston Buffalos in 1937. Over 1,004 games he hit .270 with 722 hits, 38 home runs, and 387 RBI, but his best season came in 1924, when he batted .342 for Cleveland with a team-record 73 RBI for a catcher (a mark that stood until 1961) and led the club in slugging at .518. Myatt was a capable handler of pitchers but had a well-documented weakness on foul pop-ups and throws to second base that eventually cut into his playing time. He was part of baseball history on May 30, 1927, catching for the Detroit Tigers when Cleveland's Johnny Neun turned an unassisted triple play, and he remained an active big leaguer into his late thirties, appearing for the pennant-winning Giants in 1935 before closing his career with Detroit in 1936 - the same 1933 season captured on his Goudey card, when he was still Cleveland's veteran receiver.
