About Eddie Morgan
Edward "Ed" Morgan (b. May 22, 1904, Cairo, Illinois; d. April 9, 1980, New Orleans) was a star athlete at Tulane University before signing with the New Orleans Pelicans of the Southern Association, where he hit .354 with 12 home runs in 1927 and was hailed by scouts as "the outstanding young player in the country." The Cleveland Indians brought him up in 1928, and he became their regular first baseman through 1933, also logging time in the outfield (121 games) and at third base (18). Nicknamed "Buddy" as a boy and "Tulane Eddie" as a pro in tribute to his college days, Morgan hit his stride in 1930 with a .349 average, a Cleveland club-record 26 home runs, and 136 RBIs, then batted a career-high .351 in 1931, third-best in the American League. His 1933 season, the year this Goudey card was issued, was turbulent: new manager Walter Johnson took over in midseason, criticized Morgan's fielding at first as "lackadaisical," cut his playing time, and by season's end Morgan had been optioned back to New Orleans after batting .264 in 39 games. That October the Boston Red Sox took him in the Rule 5 draft; 1934 was his final major-league season. He finished his career with a .313 batting average and 52 home runs.
