About Cliff Heathcote
Clifton Earl Heathcote was born January 24, 1898, in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1918 after impressing at a tryout camp, debuting that June. A left-handed-hitting outfielder, he spent 15 major-league seasons with the Cardinals (1918-1922), Chicago Cubs (1922-1930), Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies — the club shown on his 1933 Goudey card, his final major-league team. Heathcote is best remembered for one of baseball's strangest transactions: on May 30, 1922, between games of a Decoration Day doubleheader, St. Louis traded him to the Cubs for outfielder Max Flack, and he promptly went 2-for-4 in his new uniform that same afternoon. A steady defender nicknamed "Rubberhead" after losing a fly ball in the sun and having it bounce off his skull, he was a valuable role player on Chicago's 1929 NL-pennant club, batting .313 in 82 games and appearing as a pinch-hitter in that year's World Series against the Athletics. He closed his career with a .275 average, 1,222 hits, 42 home runs, and 448 RBI over 1,415 games, playing his last season with the Phillies in 1932 before retiring to the dairy business in Pennsylvania. He died in York, Pennsylvania, on January 18, 1939.
