About Virgil Davis

Virgil Lawrence "Spud" Davis broke into pro ball in 1926 with Class D Gulfport, was purchased by the Yankees, then claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals. Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in May 1928 for fellow catcher Jimmie Wilson, the right-handed-hitting Davis developed into one of the game's best-hitting catchers, batting over .300 in ten of his sixteen big-league seasons. His finest year was 1933 - the very season pictured on this card - when he hit .349 in 141 games for the Phillies, the third-best average in the majors behind only Chuck Klein and Jimmie Foxx. That November he was traded back to St. Louis, reversing the Wilson deal, and became the regular catcher for the 1934 "Gashouse Gang" that won the World Series; used mainly as a pinch-hitter in that Series, he singled in both his at-bats. He also caught for the Reds and Pirates, finishing with a .308 career average (fourth all-time among catchers), 1,312 hits, 77 home runs, and 647 RBI over 1,458 games. His nickname dated to boyhood, when an uncle began calling him "Spud" for his love of potatoes. After retiring he coached and scouted, and was later inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Virgil Davis card?

It is card #210 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Virgil Davis with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Why does this card have no team banner?

It comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design - 72 cards in the set share the bannerless look.

Is the 1933 Goudey Virgil Davis #210 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
