About Harry McCurdy

Harry Henry McCurdy, born September 15, 1899, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was a left-handed-hitting catcher who broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals on July 1, 1922. After parts of two seasons in St. Louis, he resurfaced with the Chicago White Sox (1926-28), where he claimed the regular catching job in 1927, edging out incumbent Buck Crouse for playing time, and hit a career-best .326 in 1926. Traded on to the Philadelphia Phillies, McCurdy became their primary catcher from 1930 to 1933 -- the run pictured on this Goudey card -- batting .331 in 1930. He closed his ten-year career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1934. Over 543 games, McCurdy hit .282 with 326 hits, 71 doubles, 9 home runs, and 148 RBI. He died July 21, 1972, in Houston, Texas, at age 72.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Harry McCurdy card?

It is card #170 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Harry McCurdy with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Is the 1933 Goudey Harry McCurdy #170 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
