Jackie Warner - 1933 Goudey #178
1933 Goudey #178 Jackie Warner

About Jackie Warner
John Ralph "Jack" Warner, a right-handed-hitting third baseman and utility infielder, broke into pro ball in 1921 with Waynesboro before starring for the Vernon Tigers of the Pacific Coast League, hitting .303 in 1924 and .296 in 1925. He debuted in the majors with the Detroit Tigers on September 24, 1925, and became Detroit's regular third baseman in 1926-27, his best season coming in 1927 when he played 138 games, scored 78 runs, and collected 149 hits. He went on to play for the Brooklyn Robins (1929-1931) before finishing his eight-year big-league career with the Phillies, the club pictured on his 1933 Goudey card. Over 478 games he batted .250 with 387 hits, 199 runs, and 120 RBI, drawing his share of walks though he was never a power threat. After his playing days ended, Warner scouted for the Chicago Cubs and spent 12 seasons coaching the Cubs' longtime Pacific Coast League farm club, the Los Angeles Angels. He died in 1986 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, at age 82. No SABR biography exists for him yet, and no documented on-card nickname beyond the common "Jackie" diminutive of John could be confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Jackie Warner card?
It is card #178 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Jackie Warner with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Is the 1933 Goudey Jackie Warner #178 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
