About Fred Leach
Frederick "Freddy" Leach (born November 23, 1897, in Springfield, Missouri; died December 10, 1981, in Hagerman, Idaho) was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder who broke into the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies on May 24, 1923. He spent six seasons in Philadelphia (1923-1928), was then traded to the New York Giants (1929-1931), and closed his career with the Boston Braves in 1932 -- the season depicted on this card. Leach was a steady line-drive hitter who batted .300 or better six times, peaking at .329 in 1926, and drove in a career-high 96 runs in 1928. Over ten major-league seasons he compiled a .307 average with 1,147 hits, 72 home runs, 509 RBI, and 543 runs scored in 991 games. He never reached a World Series or drew MVP votes, and no widely documented nickname beyond the common diminutive "Freddy" is attached to him; he remains one of the steadier, lesser-known everyday outfielders of the late-1920s/early-1930s National League, his career already over by the time Goudey issued this card.
