About Horace Ford
Horace Hills Ford — known throughout his career as "Hod," a nickname shortened from his first name — was born July 23, 1897, in New Haven, Connecticut. A slick-fielding middle infielder, he broke into the majors with the Boston Braves in 1919 and won the starting second-base job in 1921, batting .279 with 29 doubles and leading National League second basemen in fielding percentage. That September, Braves Field held a "Hod Ford Day" in his honor, and he celebrated by turning an unassisted triple play and going 3-for-4. Ford later shifted to shortstop and, with the Cincinnati Reds (1926-1931), formed a standout double-play combination with Hughie Critz, turning 194 twin killings in 1928 alone — defense strong enough to draw National League MVP votes despite a .241 average that year. He also played for the Phillies, Brooklyn Robins, and St. Louis Cardinals before returning to Boston, where a poor start to 1933 (one hit in his first 15 at-bats) ended his 15-year, five-team big-league career. He finished with a .263 average, 1,269 hits, 16 home runs, and 494 RBI over 1,446 games, and later ran an ice cream shop in Winchester, Massachusetts, where he died in 1977.
