About Kiki Cuyler
Hazen Shirley "Kiki" Cuyler broke into pro ball as a pitcher in Michigan industrial and Michigan-Ontario League ball before the Pittsburgh Pirates bought his contract in 1921 and converted him to the outfield. He debuted with Pittsburgh in 1921, blossomed into a star by the mid-1920s, then played for the Chicago Cubs (1928-1935), Cincinnati Reds (1935-1936), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1938) across an 18-year career. A left-handed-hitting right fielder with speed and power, he batted .321 lifetime with 2,299 hits, 128 home runs, 1,065 RBI, and 328 stolen bases, leading the National League in steals four times (1926, 1928-1930) and topping .350 in four seasons, including a career-best .357 in 1925. His nickname "Kiki" grew out of teammates and fans echoing "Cuy-Cuy" as he ran down fly balls in the minors. Cuyler helped Pittsburgh win the 1925 pennant and World Series, delivering a decisive two-run double in the eighth inning of Game Seven, then anchored Chicago Cubs pennant winners in 1929, 1932, and 1935 - the latter two years bracketing his 1933 Goudey card, though a broken fibula suffered in spring training limited him to just 70 games (batting .317) that season. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1968.
