About Johnny Schulte
John Clement Schulte, born September 8, 1896, in Fredericktown, Missouri, broke into pro ball in 1915 with the Class D Oklahoma City Senators as an outfielder before converting to catcher in 1921 with the Mobile Bears. A left-handed hitter and backup catcher, he reached the majors in 1923 with the St. Louis Browns and went on to appear for the St. Louis Cardinals (1927), Philadelphia Phillies (1928), Chicago Cubs (1929), and Boston Braves (1932), batting .262 over 192 games with 98 hits, 14 home runs, and 64 RBI. His best season came in 1927 with St. Louis, when he hit .288 with 9 home runs in part-time duty, and he closed his playing days on a rare note, homering in his final big-league at-bat on September 20, 1932. By 1933 he had moved into coaching with the Cubs, and the following year Joe McCarthy brought him to the New York Yankees as bullpen and pitching coach, a post he held for fifteen seasons (1934-1948) under McCarthy, Bill Dickey, Johnny Neun, and Bucky Harris, winning seven pennants and six World Series titles. As a Yankees talent man he is credited with helping steer Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford into the organization. He later scouted for Cleveland into the early 1960s and died June 28, 1978, in St. Louis at age 81.
