About Riggs Stephenson
Jackson Riggs Stephenson (1898-1985) was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who starred at the University of Alabama in football and baseball before Cleveland Indians scouts, tipped off by his college football coach, brought him to the majors. He broke in with Cleveland in 1921, playing second base, third base, and outfield, but a weak throwing arm pushed him toward Chicago, where the Cubs made him their left fielder from 1926 to 1934. Nicknamed "Old Hoss" for his dependability as a hitter, Stephenson retired with a .336 career batting average, 1,515 hits, and 63 home runs over 14 seasons - one of the highest lifetime averages in major-league history. His best year came in 1929, when he hit .362 with a career-high 110 RBI and 17 homers, joining Hack Wilson and Kiki Cuyler as part of the first outfield trio in National League history to each drive in 100-plus runs, powering the Cubs to the NL pennant. He hit .316 with a hit in every game of that year's World Series, a five-game loss to the Philadelphia Athletics. Injuries limited his playing time in other seasons, but he remained a Cubs fixture through 1934 before finishing his playing days in the minors and later managing Birmingham to a league title in 1936.
