About Pat Malone
Perce Leigh "Pat" Malone (born September 25, 1902, in Altoona, Pennsylvania; died May 13, 1943) was a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher who broke in with the Class D Knoxville Pioneers in 1921 before John McGraw's Giants purchased his contract; after further minor-league seasoning at Des Moines and Minneapolis, the Chicago Cubs bought him for the 1928 season. Malone became a workhorse of the Cubs' staff from 1928-1934, then closed his career with the New York Yankees (1935-1937). His best year came in 1929, when he went 22-10 and led the National League in wins, shutouts, and strikeouts (166); he led the NL in wins again in 1930 with 20. He finished with a 134-92 record, a 3.74 ERA, and 1,024 strikeouts over 357 appearances. Malone pitched in the World Series with the Cubs in 1929 and 1932 (working scoreless relief the game after Babe Ruth's "called shot") and won a ring with the 1936 champion Yankees, recording a save in Game Three. Off the field he was a notorious prankster and night-lifer - fined $500 in 1931 for a scuffle with two sportswriters - and his heavy drinking is linked to his early death from acute pancreatitis at 40.
