1933 Goudey #203 Lon Warneke
No team banner: this card comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design.

About Lon Warneke
Lonnie "Lon" Warneke (1909-1976), born in Mount Ida, Arkansas, broke into the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1930 as a right-handed pitcher. Across 15 big-league seasons with the Cubs (1930-36, 1942-43, 1945) and St. Louis Cardinals (1937-42), he went 192-121 with a 3.18 ERA and 1,140 strikeouts. His breakout year was 1932: he led the National League with 22 wins, a 2.37 ERA and a .786 winning percentage, finished runner-up to Chuck Klein for MVP, and helped Chicago to the pennant and a World Series meeting with Babe Ruth's Yankees. A five-time NL All-Star (1933, 1934, 1936, 1939, 1941), he no-hit the Reds on August 30, 1941, and set a big-league fielding record for consecutive errorless chances by a pitcher. St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Roy Stockton nicknamed him "the Arkansas Hummingbird" for his quick, darting delivery. After retiring he became a National League umpire (1949-55), working the 1952 All-Star Game and the 1954 World Series - the only man to both play and umpire in each - and later served as Garland County judge in Arkansas. He is not in Cooperstown but was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Lon Warneke card?
It is card #203 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Lon Warneke with the Chicago Cubs.
Why does this card have no team banner?
It comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design - 72 cards in the set share the bannerless look.
Is the 1933 Goudey Lon Warneke #203 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
