1933 Goudey #224 Frank Demaree
No team banner: this card comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design.

About Frank Demaree
Joseph Franklin "Frank" Demaree (b. June 10, 1910, Winters, California; d. August 30, 1958) broke into pro ball with the Sacramento Senators of the Pacific Coast League in 1930, then had a monster 1934 season with the PCL's Los Angeles Angels, leading the league in runs, hits, home runs, RBI, and batting average (.383) to win MVP honors. A right-handed-throwing outfielder, he debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 1932 and played 12 big-league seasons (1932-33 and 1935-38 with the Cubs, then the New York Giants, Boston Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis Browns through 1944), batting .299 with 1,241 hits, 72 home runs, and 591 RBI over 1,155 games. He was a two-time NL All-Star (1936-37) and helped the Cubs to pennants in 1932, 1935, and 1938, playing in four World Series in all, though his teams lost each time; in the 1932 Series he homered off the Yankees and robbed both Frank Crosetti and Lou Gehrig of home runs with outstanding outfield catches. From 1935-38 he strung together a 396-game consecutive-games streak that stood as a Cubs franchise record for nearly two decades. Demaree was later inducted into the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame (2009) and the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame (1989).

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Frank Demaree card?
It is card #224 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Frank Demaree with the Chicago Cubs.
Why does this card have no team banner?
It comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design - 72 cards in the set share the bannerless look.
Is the 1933 Goudey Frank Demaree #224 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
