About Billy Urbanski
William "Billy" Urbanski (1903-1973), a shortstop and third baseman, is the subject of card #212 in this set, pictured with the Boston Braves. Born in Linoleumville on Staten Island and raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, he skipped finishing high school for barber college and kept cutting hair even after turning pro. He starred in New Jersey semipro ball before signing with the Jersey City Skeeters of the International League in 1925, then spent five minor-league seasons with clubs including the Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Royals. A .331 showing for Montreal in 1931 prompted Boston to buy his contract for a reported $30,000. He debuted with the Braves on July 4, 1931 as a rookie third baseman, then was shifted to shortstop in 1932 by manager Bill McKechnie, developing into one of the National League's better defenders. His best season came in 1934, when he hit .293 and led the NL with 104 runs scored, drawing consideration as an All-Star replacement. He was also regarded as one of the league's top bunters, once reaching base four times on walks and twice more on sacrifice bunts in a single 1934 game without being charged an official at-bat. Urbanski played his entire seven-year big-league career with Boston (1931-1937), batting .260 with 791 hits, 19 home runs, and 207 RBI in 763 games before finishing out his playing days in the minors and settling into the insurance business back in Perth Amboy.
