1933 Goudey #91 Tom Zachary

About Tom Zachary
Tom Zachary was a left-handed pitcher who spent 19 seasons in the majors, 1918-1936, and is the subject of card #91, shown with the Boston Braves. Born in Graham, North Carolina, and raised a Quaker farm boy who played college ball at Guilford College, he broke in with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1918 (briefly under the alias "Zach Walton" to protect his college eligibility) before military service interrupted his rookie year. He found his footing with the Washington Senators (1919-1927), then pitched for the St. Louis Browns, New York Yankees (1928-1930), the Braves (1930-1933, claimed off waivers), Brooklyn, and finally Philadelphia in 1936. Relying on a change of pace and curveball rather than a hard fastball, he won 186 games against 191 losses with a 3.73 ERA and 720 strikeouts, and helped the Senators win the 1924 World Series and the Yankees win it in 1928. His signature season came in 1929, when he went a perfect 12-0 with a 2.48 ERA for New York and was named the Sporting News' American League Pitcher of the Year. He is best remembered, however, for a single pitch: on September 30, 1927, he served up Babe Ruth's record-setting 60th home run of the season, a moment that forever links the journeyman lefty to the game's most famous slugger.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Tom Zachary card?
It is card #91 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Tom Zachary with the Boston Braves.
Is the 1933 Goudey Tom Zachary #91 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
